The trailer for Oz the Great and Powerful, which serves as a prequel to the beloved classic, The Wizard of Oz, dropped online last night – and I admit, I was pleasantly surprised.
I admit, when I saw the who was involved with this movie, I had high hopes. There isn’t a single name here I don’t like: Sam Raimi directing, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. With that lineup, you can’t go wrong. But what I really though the trailer captured was the wonder of Oz. What made the 1929 film with Judy Garland so great (besides the fact that it was the ah-mazing Judy Garland, of course), was not just the characters in the land of Oz, but Oz itself. No matter how you or old you are, or what year you watch the film, everyone feels the same awe and intrigue – and that small bit of fear – that Dorothy feels on her journey to meet the Wizard.
For me, this trailer plays those same emotions perfectly.
Oz the Great and Powerful will be released in theaters March 8, 2013.
